St. Mary's
St Marys is an historic suburb, known as the gateway to the Penrith Valley.
It its around 45 km from the CBD and takes its name from the St Mary Magdalene
Church (1840) on the Great Western Highway. In the early part of the century,
St Marys was an industrial centre with wagon builders and tanneries. One
famous visitor was Charles Darwin who, when passing through Mamre in January
1836, was impressed by the '...good humour and superior hunting skills'
of the Aborigines he encounter...
