- NASA aims one of its probes directly
at an astoroid and successfully hits it.

- A massive Tsunami hits the shores
of many islands and low lying areas of coastal areas of
Indonesia.
- Saddam Husein is captured by American
Forces.
2000
- This was the year when Sydney
proudly delivered “The Best Olympic Games ever”
and Cathy Freeman won the hearts of the nation – and
400 metre gold
- Charles Shultz, the legendary
creator of the happy gang of characters in the “Peanuts”
comic strip syndicated to 2600 newspapers, died
- Russell Crowe wowed us all with
his performance in Gladiator
- France was shocked when a Concorde
Supersonic Airliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Charles
De Gaul Airport.
1995
- O.J. Simpson’s trial ended
with the former footballer and actor being acquitted
- Tthe United States was rocked again by
the Oklahoma City Bombing
- The year brought an end to the fighting
in Bosnia
- Japan was rocked by nature when an earthquake
hit Kobe
- Old enemies came together in friendly
space when the U.S. space shuttle docked with the MIR Space
Station.
1991
- The first Gulf War began
- The Soviet Union Collapsed
- Another milestone was reached when South
Africa Repealed its apartheid laws
- Messrs Branson and Lindstrand added
to their previous achievements by making the first Trans-Pacific
crossing in a hot-air ballon
- President Gorbachev’s resignation
triggered the collapse of the Soviet Union.
1987
- West German teenager Matthias
Rust landed his Cessna light aircraft in Moscow’s
Red Square.
- Richard Branson later knighted, joined
Per Lindstrand in the first Trans-atlantic crossing by hot-air
balloon
Wall Street’s “Black Monday”.
- Van Gogh’s “Lilies”
changed hands for a cool $49 million in New York.
- “Graceland” broke
new musical ground as Paul Simon popularised the music of
Africa.
- “Stars and Stripes”
took back the America’s Cup.
- Pat Cash climbed up the stands to embrace
family and friends after winning the Wimbledon singles crown.
1983
- Bob Hawke became Prime Minister
of Australia.
- Ronald Ragan was pre-occupied by the
“Star-Wars” defensive shield.
- Solidarity’s hero Lech Walesa
won the Nobel Peace Price.
- M.A.S.H. came to an end after 251 episodes.
- Australia II achieved legendary status
by wresting the America’s Cup from Liberty by 4 races
to 3.
- CD’s were launched.
